THE BEST places to live in the world have been ranked. From Australia to Canada, the list is extensive. But which location is number one?

The Economist Intelligence Unit's "Global Liveability Report” has now ranked the best places in the world to live. The list scored 140 cities by five categories which included stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. While some of the destinations are hardly unsurprising, there are some countries which don’t make the cut at all.

Here are the best places to live in the world.

1) Vienna, Austria

When you think of the best place to live in the world, you may not think of Austria.
But according to the report, the Austrian capital is the best place to live in the entire world according to its ranking system.

With an overall rating of 99.1, a culture and environment rating of 96.3 and a score of 100 for stability, healthcare, education and infrastructure, it is hardly surprising it came out top.
The city has a low cost of living and is both safe and comfortable while providing adventure.

2) Melbourne, Australia

While it may not officially be the best place to live in the world in this report, it is the best place to live in Australia.
The city is known for being both stylish, sophisticated and big enough to get lost in while being safe.
Overall, the city has a rating on 98.4, scoring 95 for stability, 98.6 for culture and environment and 100 for education, infrastructure and healthcare.
The city also has the largest tram system outside of Europe, and was the capital of Australia for 26 years before it was clinched by Canberra back in 1927.

3) Sydney, Australia

Another Australian gem that is known all around the world for its stunning opera house.
According to the list, it was the only city to improve its score from last year to this year.
The city has an overall score of 98.1, scoring 95 on stability, 97.2 for healthcare and 100 for healthcare, education and infrastructure.
However, it is allegedly the 12th most expensive city in the world which doesn’t suit everyone.

4) Osaka, Japan

Osaka in Japan is often overlooked with both Tokyo and Yokohama often hogging the limelight.
But now Japan’s third largest city has become a hotspot in its own right, especially when it comes to delectable cuisine.
The city scores 97.7 overall, with culture and environment scoring 93.5, infrastructure 96.4 and stability, healthcare and education scoring an impressive 100.
The city is also the birthplace of Kabuki and Bunraku theatre.

5) Calgary, Canada

Narrowly pipping Vancouver to fifth place, Calgary is Canada’s most liveable city.
The city scores 97.5 overall, 90 for culture and environment and 100 for stability, healthcare, education and infrastructure.
Sitting alongside the Canadian Rockies, the city is more than 1000 metres above sea level.
This destination is also known as Canada’s sunniest city.
